QAM TUNER FAQs
What is it?
QAM tuner stands for Quadrature Ampliture Modulation. It is the transmission method cable TV companies use to send digital TV signals. TVs with QAM tuners are capable of receiving digital TV signals without a converter box.Don’t assume! While many TV sets manufactured after 2004 are equipped with QAM tuners, not all of them are. If you’re not sure whether your TV has a QAM tuner, please check so you don’t lose channels.
If you find that your TV sets have a QAM tuner you may need to perform a channel scan once a week to obtain new Digital/HD channels. This will only be necessary while we are adding new channels to our line up this summer.
How do I know if my TV has a QAM tuner?
There are some simple ways to tell if your TV set has a built-in QAM tuner:
- Consult your owner’s manual (if you threw it away, check online).
- Contact the manufacturer.
- Check with the retailer who sold you the set.
- Look for the DCR (Digital Cable Ready) label on your set.
My TV set has a QAM tuner but I see a crawl that my channels are going to disappear soon.
If you see a channel crawl that you are going to lose channels, you are watching an analog channel. To watch digital channels on a TV set with a QAM tuner you must perform a channel scan.To learn how to perform a channel scan:
- Consult your owner’s manual (if you threw it away, check online).
- Contact the manufacturer.
Why are the channels on my QAM tuner TV different than other TVs?
To send channels to you with the best picture quality, channels are
transmitted on QAM streams. QAM streams are not organized using our channel
lineup numbers; instead they are organized to best maximize space. Our
channel lineup is also delivered using this system but can only be decoded
by a converter box. Once the converter decodes this information, it
reorganizes the QAM streams to match our channel lineup. A QAM tuner TV
without a converter or Cable Card cannot decode the channel lineup on its
own.For example, the Weather Channel is sent out on QAM stream 79.68. a converter box would realign this to channel 68 using our particular channel lineup. The Weather Channel, on a QAM tuner TV, has to be turned to channel 79.68 to view the channel.
To ensure that you are receiving all the channels you must perform a channel scan. Consult your television owner's manual or the manufacturer about performing a channel scan. Due to the hundreds of TV models, our representatives may not be able to help you perform a channel scan.
A QAM tuner TV equipped with a Cable Card or digital converter from Massillon Cable TV or Clear Picture will enable the TV to realign channels according to our channel lineup. IMPORTANT NOTE: Program networks may require that their digital signals be scrambled in the future. The networks are within their rights to require us to do this. That means it is possible that the number of program networks available with a QAM tuner may become smaller over time. It is our desire to maintain as many unencrypted QAM signals as possible, but we must comply with the network requirements.
